The most functional garage has all of the necessary tools to perform the tasks which come up on occasion, whether they are automotive related or otherwise, and having the right air compressor is definitely important. While most residential garage owners will invest in an air compressor, many just go out and pick up whatever they can find. However, air compressors are available in a vast array of different types, sizes, and styles, each suitable for specific applications. Here are a few of the biggest questions you should be asking yourself if you are planning to invest in an air compressor for your garage.

How much floor space do you have available?

If you don't have a lot of extra floor space available in your garage, you may not want to invest in an air compressor that boasts horizontally mounted air tanks. Look for an air compressor which offers vertically mounted tanks that take up much less floor space. You can also go with a smaller version of an industrial rotary screw air compressor, which has the capability to produce compressed air at a much faster rate, so a massive volume for air storage will not be a necessity.

Do you use a lot of heavy-duty air tools in your garage?

Torque wrenches, air hammers, and painting equipment are all examples of tools which require compressed air for operation. If you use heavy-duty air tools on a regular basis, it is only logical that you go for an air compressor that can cater to the demands. Not only do these tools require an air compressor with a lot of volume, but the ability to produce compressed air quickly as it is depleted. Therefore, a large piston-type air compressor with sizable air storage tanks is usually the best route to go.

How much electric power do you have available?

Most air compressors you will pick up at your local hardware store are electric powered. While the majority of these air compressors only require a 110-volt outlet, some of the larger models do require a larger 240-volt outlet and breaker. This should be considered before you make an investment in an air compressor so you can ensure you have the proper amount of electrical power available. If electricity in your garage is limited, you should also know that you can buy gas-powered air compressors as well, but these air compressors can be a little more costly and harder to find in a residential size.
