You want to do a little elevating to your interior design that includes injecting some architectural flair, so you take a trip to the local home improvement store and find some pretty impressive interior trim pieces. The molding, keystones, and columns you are considering are beautiful, but there are two materials available: wood and stucco. Stucco is the less-expensive option, but you do not know a lot about this material when it is used as interior trim.

Stucco is most commonly associated with the siding, but there are crown moldings, trim pieces, and other items for indoor use made out of stucco as well. Here is a look at the pros and cons of interior extruded stucco trim over wood molding.

Pro: Stucco is lighter weight and easier to install.

One of the greatest advantages of interior stucco trim is that it is far more lightweight than wood. Therefore, it is a lot easier to maneuver and install in your home. For instance, if you are installing extruded stucco trim around windows and doors, you won't have to struggle to hold them in place or secure them because these pieces do not weigh a whole lot.

Con: Stucco is not quite as durable as wood.

Because stucco is made out of materials that are not as dense as wood, stucco interior trim can be a little less resilient. You may be able to cause a dent in a piece of stucco trim if you tap it too hard with a hammer during installation, for instance. However, stucco can last for many years when it is properly handled.

Pro: Stucco is not as prone to problems with termites as wood.

Stucco is created out of a mix of synthetic and some natural fibers and compounds, which means if you were to get termites, the stucco trim would not be all that attractive for the pests. Wood, on the other hand, would be highly prone to damage if there was a termite infestation in the house because wood is the natural food choice for these bugs.

Con: Stucco trim may not offer as many design choices as wood.

Even though stucco trim for the inside of the house has grown in popularity, it is still not as widely sought after as wood. Therefore, you may find that it is harder to find stucco trim pieces in multiple design options and wood design choices are more available.
